About the Educational Resources Working Group
The mission of the ShakeAlert Educational Resources Working Group (ERWG) is to serve broad and diverse learners through educational resources and efforts that promote awareness, understanding, and action related to ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning.
- Develop educational resources that promote awareness, understanding, and action related to the ShakeAlert System and earthquake science more broadly.
- Engage broad and diverse learners in a variety of educational settings, including formal and free-choice learning environments.
- Engage educators and communicators in a broad variety of settings and roles; provide tools (e.g. educational resources, professional development, network support) that empower educators to engage learners in their own communities/settings.
- Conduct educational research and evaluation to understand various learners’ needs and priorities related to earthquake education.

We welcome members from all sectors (K-12, university, informal education, government, and more). Roles and commitment levels are flexible to match each member’s interests and capacity. Education Resource Development
The Education Resource and Development team creates, updates and reviews educational resources guided by the needs identified within ERWG and in collaboration with other JCCEO&TE Working Groups. The team works to incorporate these resources into the ShakeAlert Education Resources collection.

The Formal Education Outreach team works with formal education partners and channels to build relationships, disseminate resources and develop educational approaches.
Informal Education and Free-Choice Learning
The Informal Education team promotes and supports ShakeAlert education in museums, libraries, parks, and other free-choice learning environments as part of the ShakeAlert EPIcenter Partnership.
Education Research and Evaluation
The Education Research and Evaluation team develops, tests, and implements methods to assess the utility and impact of ERWG resources across communities and audiences. Participants working on this initiative work in collaboration with the ShakeAlert Social Science Working Group.
Emergency Management and Technical Partner Education
The Emergency Management and Technical Partner Education team works to build relationships, disseminate resources and develop approaches for integrating ShakeAlert education with earthquake mitigation and preparedness topics in emergency management settings. This team is also on the lookout for excellent earthquake resources already in existence to bring into the ShakeAlert community. Participants working on this initiative work in collaboration with the ShakeAlert Technical Users Working Group
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA)
The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility team helps all ERWG members and the ShakeAlert community in general structure our efforts in a way that increases the diversity of people engaged with ShakeAlert, equity of access to ShakeAlert materials, and inclusion of underrepresented voices in the ERWG collaborative process. This initiative involves all ERWG members doing their part to promote equity and inclusion.
